Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI)

The Capability Maturity Model was originally developed as a tool for objectively assessing the ability of government contractors’ processes to implement a contracted software project management.

CMMI (Capability Maturity Model Integration)is a process level improvement training and appraisal program which focus on three levels:

  1. Product and service development — CMMI for Development (CMMI-DEV),
  2. Service establishment, management, — CMMI for Services (CMMI-SVC), and
  3. Product and service acquisition — CMMI for Acquisition (CMMI-ACQ).

CMMI is a proven industry framework to improve product quality and development efficiency for both hardware and software which is sponsored by US Department of Defence in cooperation with Carnegie Mellon University and the Software Engineering Institute (SEI). Many companies have been involved in CMMI definition such as Motorola and Ericsson. The establishment of CMMI as a model enables to improve business results. CMMI, staged, uses 5 levels to describe the maturity of the organization, same as predecessor CMM. It is a vastly improved version of the CMM. The main emphasis is on business needs, integration and institutionalization
